Haifa U seminar in Italy: From a Grafted Vine to a Glass of Wine

Haifa U seminar in Italy: From a Grafted Vine to a Glass of Wine

In September 2013, a seminar was arranged in Italy, aiming to explain and demonstrate the benefits of Haifa fertilizers in breeding wine grapes, and the ways they can help getting specific oenological features. The seminar lectures attempted to enrich the participants' knowledge on advanced fertilization practices, addressing various climate zones and growth environments.

The Seminar was set as a tour in the main wine areas of Northeast Italy, and combined lectures with visits in vineyards and wineries. The participants had the chance to learn from expert researchers and growers, and to discuss with them fertilization issues.

The seminar also included a session of wine tasting, where wines made of grapes grown by traditional methods were compared to wines made of grapes that received advanced fertilization.

**How to achieve high-quality wine grapes**

Advanced irrigation and fertilization managements allow for production of high-quality wine grapes in regions showing sub-optimal climate or soil conditions.

Furthermore, climate changes turn once ideal zones for wine grapes growing into non-ideal. To retain production of quality wines in these areas, it is necessary to correct the effect of climate changes by careful water and nutritional management. Fertilization can also help achieving specific characteristics of the wine, to satisfy market requirements, some of them dictated by temporal fashions, e.g. lower alcohol level, higher freshness and richer in aroma compounds.

We hope that that this seminar will pave the path for many others, as this is an important platform for sharing of knowledge and learning on professional advances.
