A fertilization program for growing hazelnuts in Spain

By fertigation, the hazelnut tree absorbs the recommended rates of nutrients and fertilizers

 

Soil type: light to medium, very poor in calcium, slightly acidic, pH 5 - 6.5.
This crop is highly sensitive to chloride.
Annual irrigation rate: ~3,500 m3/ha.
Plant Population: 400-600 plants/ha.
Expected yield: 2.5 t/ha (in shells).

Multi-K – Potassium nitrate (13-0-46).
MAP – mono-ammonium phosphate (0-61-0).
Amm. Nit – Ammonium Nitrate (34-0-0).
Magnisal – Magnesium nitrate (10.8-0-0-15.8).


It is important to watch for boron and iron deficiencies. Where needed a single application of 0.1% boric acid or borax at 125 g/tree reduces the prportion of empty nuts.
Iron deficiency may be cured by applying Fe-EDDHA at 100 g/tree, in March.
