Identify and handle crop magnesium deficiencies
Interveinal yellowing suggests Mg deficiency

Magnesium roles in the plant

Magnesium is the heart of the chlorophyll molecule.
- It is essential for photosynthesis and formation of carbohydrates.
- Involved in enzymatic reactions and assists in generation of energy.
| Typical symptom: interveinal yellowing | ♦ Appears first on older leaves ♦ Proceeds to young leaves as deficiency gets worse |

Magnesium deficiency: causes and correction
Nutritional balance:
♦ Calcium, potassium and ammoniacal nitrogen compete with magnesium on plant uptake.
♦ Avoid surplus application of K, Ca or NH4 that might result in magnesium deficiency.
♦ Keep nutritional balance according to the crop’s needs.

![]() | Are Mg levels in nutrient solution sufficient and suit the crop’s requirements at the growth stage? | Adjust Mg supply
| For most crops the pH of the root zone should be between 5.5 and 7.0 | ♦ Adjust the pH of the nutritional solution to 5.5-6.5 by pH adding acid to the stock tank ♦ Applying of ammonium to lower pH should be done carefully, as it competes with the magnesium on root uptake | |
![]() | Root zone temperature: below 15⁰C (59⁰F ) P uptake is impaired | ♦ Consider heating of the root zone using heating pipes ♦ Heat the nutrient solution if practical
![]() | Phosphorus form insoluble precipitates with magnesium, making it unavailable for plant uptake. | Do not mix magnesium fertilizers in the same tank with P fertilizers.

![]() | Foliar application of magnesium fertilizer is an effective way to provide Mg at stages of pick demand and to correct deficiencies.
